My old folks at home use local compost. It works well. For large farms, a study in UNAAB found that the mix of organic compost and inorganic fertilizer gave the best results. It has to be said that for organic farms, inorganic fertilizer is a big no no. See the study below;

The treatment were poultry manure, chromo/eana odorant (Siam weed ), ;Iz NPK +, ;Iz plant tonic, ;Iz NPK+ ;Iz PMT,100 % PMT (poultry manure tea) , control( no amendment), 100 % PT (Plant tonic), 100% NPK 15-15-15. The experimental design was completely randomized design (CRD). Observation were taken on sweet pepper stem girth, plant height and number of leaves. Soil sample were analysed before planting and at sweet pepper harvest. The result obtained shown that effect of Organic fertilizers were pronounced on sweet pepper growth, plant height, stem girth, numbers of leaves and changes in soil chemical composition compared with control Poultry manure (PM) supplemented with plant tonic improved the soil chemical composition than the sole use of inorganic fertilizers and control. Organic based fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) improve the plant height, number of leaves when supplemented with inorganic fertilizer. The application of organic fertilizer or manure only improved soil fertility at sweet pepper harvest. The results reveals that at half full rate of poultry manure tea or plant tonic with inorganic fertilizer should be applied to enhance good productivity and sustainable farming system of capsicum annum.
